LEVEL 14: FINAL CONFLICT

Kills: 9(*) Supplies: 24 Artifacts: 4 Relics: 0 Rubbing Rewards: 2(**)

From CHECKPOINT 1, in the doorway between the previous level and this one, step forward into the throne room.

CINEMATIC AT START OF LEVEL:

Lara approaches the Scion, which is hovering above a pedestal, glowing with mystical energy. She then peers over the edge toward the lava pool far below. From this vantage point, she is able to see a huge, pulsing incubation pod suspended on the wall ahead. Natla, regal yet somehow sinister in her crown and robes, interrupts Lara's explorations.

"You've reached the top, Lara," she says. "There's nowhere left to go but down."

The squad of cat mutants behind her confirms Lara's suspicions that Natla is rebuilding the armies of Atlantis. When Lara confronts her with that information, Natla admits she's breeding more than just mutant foot soldiers. With the Scion, she can create anything she desires.

"It takes three to rule," Natla explains. "Tihocan and Qualopec were too weak to destroy what stands in the way of the Seventh Age. But you have the strength to claim this seat beside me. Immortality has its price, but what are a few lives to sacrifice for your dreams."

"This is madness!" Lara exclaims.

"This is what you've been searching for. The answers you've sought your entire life are within the Scion. Everything you've done has led you to this place. You're here because you belong here, Lara.... That's who you are."

Lara struggles for a moment with Natla's words. How much is Lara willing to sacrifice in order to achieve her own goal? Is finding the mother she lost so many years ago worth killing for? Apparently not. Her decision made, Lara offers a brief apology to her dead father. She aims a pistol at the Scion and fires.

"No!" Natla screams, launching herself at Lara and hurling them both off the edge of the platform. Lara manages to struggle free and grab onto a ledge, but Natla falls all the way to the bottom of the shaft and sinks into the lava.

Lara pulls up onto the platform only to find that she's gone from the fire into the proverbial frying pan. As the Scion shudders with energy on its pedestal, the massive sac of flesh spews forth an abomination.

BATTLING THE ABOMINATION:

When the cut scene ends, CHECKPOINT 2 registers and the humongous, legless mutant drags itself toward Lara across the platform.

As with the other bosses in this game, this beast cannot be defeated directly. Just shooting it does nothing. Instead you must employ a few special techniques similar to the ones you used to beat the T. rex and the centaurs.

First, step-by-step instructions explaining the basic strategy:

  • As soon as you regain control of Lara, get a Target Lock on the mutant and start firing. There's no need to move, since Lara is already in the perfect position. The goal is to enrage the beast before it gets too close.
  • If you have a lot of ammunition for the SMGs, use them. This fight will go much faster if you do. If not, the abomination can be defeated with any other weapon, including regular pistols, though it helps if you can shoot very fast. You want to make the boss's rage bar fills up as quickly as possible.
  • When the mutant becomes enraged, its rage meter will flash red. The creature will pause and let out a roar. You'll see "sound" waves emanating from its head. Then it will charge.
  • As the mutant lunges toward Lara, the screen blurs and the action shifts into slow motion. Now you must do the adrenaline dodge and headshot maneuver:
    • Stop shooting but continue to maintain a target lock.
    • Move to the left or right and simultaneously press Crouch (or shake the nunchuk if playing on the Wii) to dodge.
    • If your dodge is successful, Lara will leap to one side and you'll see 2 gray targeting reticules converge on the boss's head. In order to see this, you may need to shift the camera to point directly at the enemy.
    • When the reticules overlap and turn red, immediately fire. (In the Wii game, you'll see only one red reticule on the enemy's head. Use the remote to aim inside this target and then fire.)
  • If you do all this correctly, the headshot will connect, and the mutant will lunge toward Lara and roll past her off the edge of the platform. The first time this happens, a short cut scene shows the beast catching the edge with its right hand and dangling above the lava.
  • When you regain control of Lara, target the mutant's hand as it clings to the edge and shoot as many times as you can. (Now is a good time to switch to a more powerful weapon if you haven't already done so.) The first time the mutant rolls off the edge, you'll only have a few seconds to shoot before it pulls up and starts attacking again. The goal is to damage its hand a bit and simultaneously increase its rage.
  • When the mutant pulls up onto the ledge, it causes a shockwave that can knock Lara off her feet. If you jump just before it lands, Lara won't be affected.
  • Continue shooting at the mutant until it becomes enraged once more. Again, try to do this quickly and move toward the back wall (the one with the closed door) as you do. When the enemy charges, repeat the adrenaline dodge and headshot (above).
  • This time, if your dodge and headshot are successful, the mutant will pound on the floor causing its left hand to become stuck. Change targets to aim at the hand.
  • As you shoot at the left hand, the mutant pounds its right hand on the floor, causing a series of tremors. If you jump just before each pound, Lara won't be knocked over.
  • Keep firing until you destroy one of the mutant's claws. (A short cut scene plays when the mutant's hand is destroyed. There's no mistaking when it happens.)
  • Continue shooting the mutant so it becomes enraged. As you do, move toward the edge of the platform. Then repeat the adrenaline dodge maneuver to lure the mutant over the edge again.
  • When it goes over, target its right hand (i.e., the one it uses to hang on). You'll see it flailing its injured left hand as it tries to pull up. Do as much damage to the hand as possible. If you use the SMGs you may be able to make the mutant let go on this turn. Otherwise, just keep shooting until it pulls up again.
  • Repeat the process, alternating between luring it to the back wall so its left hand gets stuck in the floor and you can shoot it and luring it over the edge. The goal is to destroy both of the claws on its left hand.
  • Now, use the adrenaline dodge to lure the mutant over the edge one last time. With its left hand destroyed, it will take it a very long time to pull up. So just keep shooting its right hand as fast as you can, and soon it will let go and fall into the lava.

Finally, a few general tips, in no particular order:

  • When using the adrenaline dodge, it's possible to dodge forward, backward, left or right, but in this particular fight you want to avoid going over the edge or hitting a wall, so its usually best to dodge to either side. If Lara does go over the edge, she'll usually grab on so you can pull up, but you miss the chance for a headshot. Likewise, if she hits a wall or the boss hits her before completing the dodge, it won't work.
  • If you don't manage to destroy one of the mutant's claws when its left hand first becomes stuck in the floor, you can try using another adrenaline dodge to lure it toward one of the side walls. The hand may become stuck again. However, once you've destroyed one of the claws, you'll need to lure the boss over the edge at least once before it will pound its hand into the floor again. I found it easiest to just alternate luring it off the edge and toward the back wall.
  • Keep your distance from the mutant so it can't swat Lara off the edge or grab her. If it does get hold of her, it will either pound her against the floor or swallow her whole. If Lara does get eaten, you can escape by shooting the mutant's innards with your pistols until it throws her up. (Nice.)
  • The mutant will also pound the floor with its massive butt. If you jump just as the butt is about to come down, you can avoid being knocked over by the shockwave.
  • Similarly, if Lara falls off the edge of the platform and grabs on, pull up as quickly as possible. Otherwise the mutant may pound the floor causing Lara to lose her grip.
  • If you're low on health or ammo, you can find 2 large medipacks, 2 sets of SMG clips and a box of shotgun shells on the platform. If you don't need the items right away, wait until the battle is over before picking them up.
When you've defeated the mutant, the door at the back of the platform opens and CHECKPOINT 3 registers.

NOTE: If you're having difficulties here, you're welcome to download my PC save files for CHECKPOINTS 2 and 3. One is at the start of the fight with a nice supply of ammo and medipacks; the other is after the battle. Macintosh, PSP and Wii save files are also available here. (Instructions are included with the downloads as well as here.)

PASSAGE WITH LAVA STREAM:

Follow the hallway past CHECKPOINT 4 and jump across the stream of flowing lava to the little rock island ahead. Turn right and take a running jump to the next solid stone. Get the large medipack and take another running jump to perch on the narrow pole sticking up from the lava pool ahead. Turn left and hop onto the next vertical pole. From there, jump to grab the ledge ahead.

Immediately pull up and shoot the winged mutant that rises up from the area ahead. Use powerful weapons to kill it as quickly as you can so its fireballs don't knock Lara off the ledge into the lava.

If you're playing the Wii game, don't touch that switch yet. Take a moment to examine the opposite wall. Use the trowel to pry away some loose rock, revealing RUBBING REWARD #1 (10/12), titled simply "Natla".

Now pull the switch on the right wall. This causes the small ledge Lara is standing on to begin to retract. At the same time, the larger ledge ahead extends toward you. Wait until it is almost fully extended and then take a running jump to grab it. Pull up and continue along the hallway, picking up some shotgun ammo on the way.

Follow the hall through several twists and turns until you can see an artifact in a raised alcove ahead. At this point, get ready for combat. As soon as you round the corner, a centaur charges from the room ahead. Try to run past it so it doesn't corner Lara in the narrow hallway. Just be careful not to run on into either of the lava pits in the next room.

ROOM WITH SWITCHES AND LAVA PITS:

CHECKPOINT 5 registers as you enter. For some reason, the grapple doesn't work on the metal cage in the raised opening. So leave it for now. Cross the room to the switch on the far wall and use it to open the exit and close the door through which you entered. Doing this also hatches one of the mutant pods on the wall, releasing a flying mutant. After the brief cut scene showing the doors opening and closing, immediately turn left and shoot it down. If you do move around while fighting, watch out for the lava pits along the side walls.

In the Nintendo Wii game, instead of just a switch, this is a two-part puzzle. The clue is located on the wall to the left as you enter the room, just below the opening with the metal cage. Take a rubbing of the inscription: four identical symbols similar to Greek Omegas (W). Cross to the far corner of the room and examine the cryptex puzzle. To solve it, turn the top cylinder once to the right. Then turn the second cylinder from the top once to the left. This causes one door to open, the other to close, and the flying mutant to explode out of its pod.

Once you've taken care of the flyer, head for the door you just opened, pick up the shotgun ammo and large medipack on the floor and go through.

ROOM WITH POOL & THREE UNDERWATER GATES:

CHECKPOINT 6 registers about halfway down the ramp and 2 mutants one cat and one flyer hatch from pods in the room ahead. If you back up the ramp immediately, the flyer shouldn't follow you. Then you can deal with the cat alone. Just be careful not to back into the lava pit behind you. When it's dead, return down the ramp and deal with the flying mutant. You'll find both shotgun shells and 50-caliber clips on the floor.

NOTE: As you explore these two rooms, you can re-use CHECKPOINTS 5 and 6 to save your progress. Both of them will register any number of times as long as you alternate stepping over each one. The save 'Final Conflict 6a' in my collection of PC saves was made at checkpoint 6 after destroying the two mutants. Macintosh, PSP and Wii save files are also available here.

The exit from this area is through the underwater tunnel on leading out of the pool. It is blocked by 3 circular gates, which you must open. First go to the far right corner. Equip the regular pistols. Then take a running jump across the small lava pit, jumping just at the edge and holding the Jump key to ensure that Lara makes it all the way across the pit, and grab the crosspiece on the shield-shaped panel. Lara's weight pulls the panel down revealing a button. When the panel has descended all the way, jump back across the lava pit and shoot the button before the panel retracts. This opens one of the underwater gates and also hatches another flying mutant. You may want to switch to the shotgun before taking on the flyer. Or, back up either of the two ramps leading out of the pool room. Usually the flyer won't follow.

When you've destroyed it, switch back to pistols and go to the other shield-shaped panel in the far left corner of the room, relative to the entrance. Jump to grab it, which is much easier this time without the lava below, and then jump back to the floor and shoot the button. Another underwater gate opens and another flying mutant emerges from its pod. Switch weapons again if you want to and shoot it down.

The switch to open the third gate is located behind that rough rock wall in the far corner of the room, which can only be reached in a roundabout way. First jump into the pool and pull the underwater lever on one of the side walls. This extends a small ledge in the room above. Climb out of the water and onto that ledge, which is just to the right of the entrance when facing it. As soon as Lara touches the ledge, a cat mutant hatches from the nearest pod. You can pull up and shoot it from the ledge with pistols if you're patient. Or jump down and fight it head-on.

Climb into the opening above the small ledge and pick up a large medipack. In the Wii game there's also a gold plaque on the right wall of this small chamber. This is RUBBING REWARD #2 (12/12), bearing the rather unsubtle title "Torso Boss".

ARTIFACT #1: Climb into the raised opening with the metal box and turn around. Jump to the rough stone ledge with ARTIFACT #1 (41/44), take it and jump back. Push the metal box out of the opening into the next room. Drop down and push the box against the rough stone pedestal near the entrance. This is CHECKPOINT 7 (same spot as 5).

Use the box to climb up onto that pedestal. Kill the flying mutant that bursts out of the pod ahead. You may want to drop down to the floor so you have more room to maneuver. When it's dead, climb back onto the pedestal and take the small medipack.

ARTIFACT #2: If you want the artifact that you saw in the hallway on the way into this area, climb up onto the ledge next to the stone pedestal and use the switch there. This re-opens the door below. Drop down and push the metal box through the door into the hallway. Use it to climb into the alcove with ARTIFACT #2 (42/44).

OPENING THE THIRD UNDERWATER GATE:

There are two ways to reach the button that opens the final gate in the pool. This shortcut is a little tricky but much more direct. Drag the metal box back into the room with the lava pits and then push it straight ahead, along the left wall but not too close to it, until the box bumps up against the low lip on the floor. This lip is designed to keep players from accidentally pushing the box into the lava, but it is possible to finesse the box up onto that lip. There's a "sweet spot" where if you hit the lip with the box at exactly the right angle, the box will just slide up there. If you can't make that happen, it's still possible to finesse the box into position by wiggling it from side to side or pulling it up onto the lip at a slight angle.

IMPORTANT: Be very careful not to push the box off the edge into the lava. If you do, it will be impossible to get out of this area. Instead you'll have to reload an earlier save. If you take care not to cross another checkpoint after accidentally destroying the box, you can save manually, reload, and try again. If you accidentally cross checkpoint 5 or 6 after losing the box, your only choice will be to reload an earlier save or download one of mine.

Once the edge of the box is on the lip, you can move it closer to the wall and straighten it out. Then climb on top and take a running jump to grab the horizontal handhold on the wall below the manmade opening. Pull up into the opening. Now skip the next paragraph and continue to the button. (Special thanks to Alain & Holly S. for this excellent tip.)

If you can't manage the shortcut, instead push the metal box back to the rough stone pedestal and climb up. From there, take a running jump to grab the top left edge of the first horizontal steam vent on the wall above the lava pit. Climb as far to the left as you can and jump to grab the next vent before the steam shoots out, burning Lara so she loses her grip and falls into the lava. Quickly climb to the left across the second vent, tapping Interact as you go to climb faster, and jump to grab the next one. Climb quickly across this one and jump to grab the handhold in the corner. Climb around the corner to the left. Jump back and grapple the metal ring on the wall above. Wall run back and forth to build up momentum and then jump to grab the rough stone handhold in the next corner. Climb to the left, jump up to grab the edge of the manmade opening above and pull up.

Take the 50-caliber clips in the opening. Then drop down into the small, dark tunnel on the other side and get pick up some shotgun ammo. Climb down into the next room. (In the Wii game this opening is blocked by a crumbling stone wall, which you'll need to remove using your pickaxe.) Now you're behind the ring of stones that you couldn't climb over from the other side. Pull the switch to open the third underwater gate and trigger CHECKPOINT 8.

NOTE: This checkpoint registers when you open the third gate, regardless of the order in which you use the three switches. If you reload, Lara will be standing in the entrance to the POOL room. If you haven't already opened the other two gates, do that now, using the shield-covered buttons in the room with the pool (as described above).

Use the low step to climb over the rocks to the pool. Jump in the water and swim through the passageway, picking up a small medipack on the way. There's an air pocket above the medipack if you need to breathe. Continue to the end of the tunnel and climb out of the water. Get the 50-caliber clips and proceed to CHECKPOINT 9.

LAVA STREAM & FALLS:

Ahead lies a deathtrap of flowing lava. Tremors rock the cavern as you enter this area, but they subside once you get past the entrance. Continue forward, jump across the first lava stream and then across the crack in the floor.

NOTE: Avoid stepping in this crack, since Lara can get one leg stuck in it permanently. If this happens, save the game, reload at CHECKPOINT 9 and try again.

Beyond the bend in the lava stream, jump across to the opposite bank and follow the ledge to where it juts out over the lava pool below. Again, there's a longer but easier route to where you're going and a more difficult shortcut.

First the long way: Stand on the left bank of the lava stream, looking downstream over the falls. Turn right and take a running jump across the lava pool far below to grab the ladder carved into the wall ahead. Fireballs periodically fall from above, but as long as Lara is hanging onto the ladder and not leaning outward, they won't touch her. Climb to the top and jump to grab the edge of the steam vent to the left. Stay as far to the right as possible to avoid the steam. Now watch the hole above on the right. When it stops belching fire, quickly jump up to grab the ledge above and move to the right just a bit to avoid the next puff of fire. Position Lara just below the left edge of the steam vent above and jump up to grab it. Then jump to the left to grab the handhold above the glowing glyph.

Now you can take your time. Climb all the way to the left along this handhold and then jump across the gap to grab the ledge on the other side. Traverse to the left a little and look down. Before dropping to grab the ledge below, make sure that Lara is at the middle of this ledge, not the left or right edges. There's a notch broken out of the right side of the ledge below. So if she drops there, she won't be able to grab. If she's too far to the left, she'll hit the lava falls. When you drop and grab the ledge below, immediately press Interact to perform a saving grab. Then pull up and take the large medipack. Drop and hang from the middle of this ledge not the right where the notch is and look down. Again, you want to position Lara at the middle of the ledge in order to drop and grab the ledge below.

From this position hanging from the middle of the narrow ledge below the one where you found the large medipack jump back to grab one of the handholds on the square column beyond the double lava falls. Take care not to jump too close to the falls. The middle of this small ledge is a good take-off point. Climb around the corner to the right and drop down twice to reach the ledge below.

Now, the shortcut: Stand on the left bank of the lava stream, looking downstream over the falls. Ahead on a ledge at about the same height as where Lara is standing now, there's a large medipack. It would be a straight shot except for the rough black rock that juts out of the left wall between you and the medipack. But it's possible to make a carefully angled running jump past that rock to grab the handhold below the medipack. Try and stay toward the right side of the bank as you run forward and a little to the left and take off close to the edge. Lara may just nick the side of the jutting rock, but if you angle the jump correctly, she'll get past it and grab the lower handhold. Then you can traverse to the left until her feet come up onto the wall, jump up to grab the ledge above and pull up to get the medipack. Now be careful climbing back down to the lower handhold. Make sure you drop and hang from the middle of the ledge with the medipack, where the ledge is straight and even; otherwise Lara can miss the grab and fall into the lava. Once you've made it to this point, skip the next two paragraphs and pick up the walkthrough below. (Special thanks to Jane S. for sharing her strategy.)

ARTIFACT #3:

In the Wii game, after dropping down from the handholds, it's a simple matter of climbing over the rocks into the area behind the lava falls to get into the cave with the artifact. Skip down to the section that begins, "Once you have the artifact. . . ."

In the other versions of the game, those rocks are too high to climb. You'll need to approach the artifact from the opposite side. Turn to face out across the lava pool. Ahead are 2 small stone islands. These will support Lara's weight but only for a few moments. After that, they sink into the lava. So you must move quickly. Take a running jump from the ledge to the first island, quickly jump to the second, and then jump to grab the handhold on the wall ahead.

At this point, if you don't want the artifact, skip the next three paragraphs and continue toward the exit.

After you've jumped across the first two stepping stones and Lara is hanging from the lower handhold, jump straight up to grab the one above. Position her near the middle of the handhold and lean back so the camera shifts to show the stepping stones behind her. Jump back over the nearest stone to land on the one beyond it. Then quickly run and jump into the little cave behind the falls. Turn left to find ARTIFACT #3 (43/44).

NOTE: If you're proficient with the controls, you can skip the handholds and jump directly across the stepping stones to the ledge behind the lava falls.

Once you have the artifact, move to the opening overlooking the stepping stones in the lava pool. If you're playing the Wii game and climbed over the rock wall, this is at the opposite side of the cave. If you came across the stepping stones to reach the cave, you'll be going back the way you came. By now, the stepping stones should have risen out of the lava pool, and you can jump across the nearest two to get back to the handholds.

Jump up to the handhold above and climb around to the left. Jump back off the wall to perch on a pointy stone column sticking up from the lava. Turn toward the next pointed pillar but take a moment to observe before jumping over there. The hole on the wall to the right of the pillar spews flame every few seconds. So carefully time your next jump so you land on the pillar just as the flames are going out. Then jump forward to grab the horizontal bar ahead. Swing around the bar and jump to the small stone island ahead. It starts to sink into the lava, so quickly jump to the safe ledge beyond.

Turn left and jump onto one more little stepping stone. Before it can sink into the lava pool, take a running jump to grab the ladder ahead. Climb to the top and step forward to CHECKPOINT 10. Whew!

If you're not collecting artifacts, simply continue forward into the final room and skip the next paragraph.

ARTIFACT #4:

If you want the last artifact in the game, after crossing the checkpoint, turn around to face out over the lava pool. Take a running jump off the ledge above the ladder and grapple the ring on the ceiling. Grapple-swing across the gap to the ledge on the far side. Quickly move out of the way of the flame jet and pick up the large medipack. Turn left and approach the edge of the ledge overlooking the lava pool you just came across. Take a running jump to the ledge jutting out of the left wall, where you'll find another large medipack. Turn right and take another running jump across the gap to the ledge with ARTIFACT #4 (44/44). (In the Nintendo Wii game, the artifact is in the same spot; you just can't see it at first. It's behind a stone wall that must be cracked open with the pickaxe.)

Once you have the statuette, return to the ledge above the ladder the way you came. You don't have to grapple-swing across on the way back, though. Lara can make it using a running jump, as long as you hold down the Jump key.

THE TOP OF THE PYRAMID - FINAL BATTLE:

Enter the large chamber at the peak of the great pyramid. At last, you've reached the final confrontation with Natla.

To save space, the cinematic sequence before the battle is transcribed in a footnote below.

CHECKPOINT 11 registers as you regain control of Lara. The big doors have closed behind you, and Natla immediately bears down on you from above. If you need supplies, there are 3 sets of SMG clips and a box of shotgun ammo on the floor just inside on the left.

NATLA - PHASE ONE:

As in the original Tomb Raider, the final battle has two stages. In the first part of the fight, you must destroy each of her wings to bring the airborne Natla down to earth. Each wing has a separate targeting reticule. When you do enough damage to each one, it becomes useless and can no longer be targeted. At this point, her health bar should be reduced to a little more than half full.

As you fight, duck or dodge to avoid her swooping lunges and jump out of the way when she launches a fireball attack. You can also hide behind the pillars to avoid the fireballs, but you'll have to move out to target her once each barrage stops.

When you've destroyed both of Natla's wings, a cut scene ensues. Natla falls to the floor and you get a clear view of a bluish-green glowing area on her back. But before Lara can do more than look, Natla leaps up and grabs Lara by the throat. "I cannot die, you fool!" she taunts, tossing Lara across the room. "Sooner or later you'll run out of bullets."

Fortunately, Natla doesn't realize that Lara's magical pistols never run out. ;)

NATLA - PHASE TWO:

Even though she can no longer fly, Natla is still a fearsome adversary. She begins by standing near one of the side walls and pelting Lara with a barrage of fireballs. These fan out in groups of three from where Natla is standing. So, for the most part, you can dodge them by jumping from side to side while facing her. Or, stand in one spot and wait for her to launch all three fireballs and then quickly jump out of the way. After unleashing several rounds of fireballs, she'll zip across to one of the adjacent walls and start the process again. Turn to face her and continue dodging.

As you do this, fire at her constantly. Again, pistols are probably your best bet, at least until you get the hang of the process. When you feel comfortable with what you need to do, you can switch over to SMGs or 50-caliber pistols, which will enrage her faster. This isn't necessary, however. You can beat her with just pistols.

Watch Natla's health and rage bars at the top right corner of the screen. When the rage bar maxes out, both bars will glow red, she'll let out a shriek (which is visible as stylized sound waves emanating from her head) and charge at Lara.

Now you must perform the old adrenaline dodge again. The technique is the same as for the previous bosses:

  • Keep a target lock on her, either by setting the combat mode to Advanced Toggle or by holding down the Target Lock button (right mouse button or G on the PC, L1 on the PS2).
  • Make sure Lara has room to maneuver in the direction you plan to roll. If Lara hits a wall or column, or if Natla is able to slash Lara with one of her wings, Lara will be knocked off her feet, and the dodge won't work.
  • To do the actual dodge, while maintaining a target lock, start moving toward or away from her and then press Crouch (or shake the Wii nunchuk).
  • If your dodge is successful, Lara will leap over or away from Natla and you'll see two separate targeting reticules converge on her. You may need to point the camera directly Natla to see it. When the reticules overlap, immediately shoot. (In the Wii game, you'll only see one red reticule. Aim inside this target with the remote and then fire.)
  • If your shot connects, Natla will be momentarily stunned, and she'll slump over, revealing the green spot on her back. Switch to more powerful weapons and shoot the glowing green spot until Natla recovers. This is the only way to injure her.
  • For most enemies, moving to the left or right works best for the adrenaline dodge, but this is not the case with Natla. If you're able to roll backwards away from her or roll forward just before you reach her, the dodge will work even better. The forward roll is a little tricky. You need to run toward Natla as she's running toward you and roll just when it looks like Lara is about to run into her. If you time the move correctly, Lara will actually leap over Natla. Then, when the targeting reticules converge, you can shoot her from behind. If you succeed, Lara ends up facing Natla's exposed back, so she's able to fire at the green spot immediately without adjusting her position.

Once she becomes enraged, Natla stays that way for a while. (Her health bar remains red.) So if you don't manage the adrenaline dodge the first time, she'll charge at Lara again and again, giving you a few more chances. If you don't succeed before her rage bar subsides, Natla's health bar will turn yellow once more, and she'll return to one side of the room and begin the fireball attacks again.

Repeat the process shoot at her while dodging the fireballs until she becomes enraged, wait for her charge, do the adrenaline doge, shoot to stun, then shoot her in the green glowing area on her back until Natla's health is reduced to zero.

When you finally defeat Natla, an interactive cut scene begins. Natla still has enough fight left in her to make a final desperate attack. Press the controls indicated on screen to evade her. Natla then taunts Lara, telling her this isn't the end, just a temporary reprieve for the human race. She vows to find another remnant of Atlantis and begin again.

Lara glimpses one of her pistols on the floor nearby. As Natla launches a fireball, Lara dives for the weapon. Press the keys indicated on screen to grab the gun, stun Natla with a well-placed shot and then grapple one of the pillars down on top of her. When you succeed, Lara runs up the broken column and makes her escape. The correct controls for each system are:

  • Windows & Macintosh PCs: Up, Down...Down, Up, Left
  • PlayStation 2: X, Circle...Circle, R1, Square
  • PSP: X, Circle...Circle, Square, Triangle
  • Xbox 360: A, B...B, RT, X
  • Nintendo Wii: First, flick both controllers upward. Second, hold both controllers level and thrust forward. Third, again hold both controllers level and thrust forward. Fourth, alternately raise and lower the two controllers. Finally, snap the nunchuk to fling the grapple.
In the final cinematic of the game, Lara dashes out of the pyramid and dives into the sea. She swims to Natla's boat as the pyramid explodes behind her, and then motors off into the distance. Job well done.
