Episode 05, Season 01 - Legion
Organ music is playing in the Church of the Sacred Blood of the Martyrs. Father John Bellamy is praying alone. Someone appears from behind and kills him. An old woman walks in and screams when she sees the dead priest.
A special Vorschlag news emergency interrupts regular broadcasting to report that Father Bellamy has been murdered and the main suspect is his counselee, Edward Nolan, who has a history of mental illness and criminal activity.
Edward Nolan is running from the police. He runs down a fire escape, jumps and lands on a pile of trash bags. Jake and Sara drive up and cuts him off at one end of the alley while another cop car blocks off the other end. The police have surrounded him, and Dante has ordered them to prepare to fire. Nolan calls himself legion. Sara's wondering whether the suspect is even armed. Nolan reaches into his jacket as if to draw out a gun. Sara has a vision of World War II with flashes of the nazis and people running from burning homes. Sara breaks cover, runs toward Nolan and knocks him down. Sara is shocked to see that Nolan's eyes has briefly turned yellow and has a vision of a fiery skeleton.
Irons and Ian are watching the news report about Sara apprehending the suspect. Irons thinks that Sara's gotten bolder and worries that she could lose her life in her attempts to save others.
The police bring Eddie Nolan into the station and aren't happy that he's still alive. Father Aloysha Petrosian enters and asks to see Nolan. Petrosian tells Sara that Eddie's innocent and that Father Bellamy thought Eddie was possessed.
Jake and Dante show Sara the murder weapon and keys to the church that were found in Nolan's apartment to prove that she saved a guilty man. They're upset that she prevented them from firing at Nolan in the alley. Father Dennis Del Torro walks in and tells them that he was worried that an incident like this would occur and warned Father Bellamy, the leading authority on demonic possession, that Nolan had severe mental problems, but that Bellamy believed that Nolan's psychosis was the work of demons. Sara visits Nolan in his jail cell and asks him what he used to kill Bellamy. Nolan couldn't answer the question and puts on a mean act.
Sara goes over to the church and asks Father Petrosian about exorcism. Petrosian tells her that there are people who are willing vessels of evil and then there are those who are blameless...they don't choose Satan, Satan chooses them. Sara asks about some books she sees, and Petrosian tells her that they were Father Bellamy's journals. She notices that the journals dated from 1936 to 1944 are missing. Danny appears and says World War II. Sara asks Petrosian to leave the room. She makes a passing remark to Danny about asking Bellamy where the missing journals are. From the look on Danny's face, she finds out that she can talk to other dead people. Danny warns against it.
Jake and Dante are interrogating Nolan, who has confessed to the crime.
Sara and Conchobar are walking in the streets. He tells her that he left the church when he was twelve back in 1985 and never returned.
Father Petrosian goes to confessional. He tells the priest that he lusts for a woman. He also tells the priest whether he should break a promise to keep a secret for a friend who's now dead and that his death may have to do with the secret. The priest tells Petrosian to return tomorrow for an answer. After Petrosian leaves, the priest tells Father Del Torro about Petrosian's confession.
Sara is at her apartment playing the drums. Danny appears and applauds. He brings the now deceased Father Bellamy to see her. Bellamy says that he never saw his killer's face. He says that he misses Eddie and that the killer is legion. Sara mentions that legion is another word for Satan. He tells Sara that the Vatican kept the Witchblade for 500 years. An unholy bargain was made between the Pope and Hitler during the war. The church would remain silent about the nazis and the atrocities, and they would leave the Vatican and its treasures untouched. Hitler, a collector of objects of power, did ask for the Witchblade. Bellamy warns that the Vatican is aware that Sara has the blade and that it wants it back.
Sara visits Nolan again in his jail cell and tells Nolan that she knows he didn't kill Bellamy.
Sara's at the gym. Jake goes up to her and expresses his dissatisfaction with the training he's getting. He thinks that she's leaving him out, so Sara tells him to drop Nolan as a suspect and to take a broader perspective on the case, including the church and Satan. Jake then asks who's been quoting scriptures.
Sara goes to the church to see Del Torro, but doesn't get much out of him. Ian is on the roof looking down at Sara and Jake driving away.
Sara and Conchobar are making love in her apartment. Irons seems to sense them.
Eddie Nolan appears to be talking to himself. The guard on duty lowers the volume and turns away from the jail cell cameras to concentrate on his dirty magazine. Del Torro is actually in Nolan's cell. Nolan is breaking down and tells him that he tries to keep his thoughts pure, but Sara makes him tell her things. Del Torro tells him that when people have evil thoughts, they must take extreme measures, so Nolan repeatedly walks and bangs his head against the wall and commits suicide.
Jake calls Sara at her apartment to tell her to get down to the station.
Sara gets to the station and finds out that Nolan suffered a severe self induced skull fracture. She has a vision of Del Torro in the cell with Nolan. When asked who last saw Nolan, the guard tells her that it was her. She doesn't believe him and thinks that the guard keeps an inaccurate log.
Sara goes to see Del Torro at the church and tells him that Nolan has died. Petrosian enters and hides behind a pew. Sara asks Del Torro what he did with the missing journals. Del Torro tells her that the Witchblade belongs to the church and that she should return it. Bellamy has appeared. Ian is also in the church observing. Sara tells Del Torro that Nolan's a poser and that he's the real thing and Father Bellamy was going to expose him, which is why he killed Bellamy. If he wanted the Witchblade he'll have to take it from her. Del Torro tosses a table at her and then lunges at her. He then throws her up near the roof of the church, which has now turned into a portal into another realm. They are wrangling in the portal. Sara shoves him back onto the the floor of the church. He swings an object at her, but she blocks it with the Witchblade. He then tries to choke her with it. They struggle, and she gets a hold of his neck with the Witchblade glove. She orders him to "be gone," and he disappears. His voice is heard telling her not to believe in old wives tales. There's a flash and Del Torro is gone.
Irons and Ian are at Vorschlag. Irons asks Ian how much Sara's learned. Ian tells him that it's hard to tell and that she was conversing with different realms. Irons thinks that Ian should have stopped it. Ian disagrees and lifts his head up and says that such an intervention may prove valuable later on. Irons pushes Ian's head back down and tells him that up until now, he was doing well, but now he'll have to be more explicit in his directions. Irons walks over to return a book back with the others on the shelf. The book and the other ones on the shelf are Father Bellamy's missing journals dated from 1936 - 1944.
Sara and Father Petrosian are outside the church. Petrosian tells her that he'll keep the events at the church a secret. Sara gives him a peck on the cheek.
