Season 3 Episode 17 - Forget Me Not

Gabrielle is filled with pain, from the death of her daughter and other things so she decides to go to the temple of Nemisine, the Goddess of memory to have every memory she has erased. The Goddess explains to her that she will have to cross three rivers in order to make the choice and at the end of it if she still wants all her memories erased then she all she has to do is drink the water from the bowl of memories. Gabrielle agrees and goes on a spiritual travel. The first thing that happens is Ares is her guide because he turned out to like her after the mortal experience he had in "The Quill Is Mightier". The first river she must cross is the river of wailing where she remembers when she first killed in "The Deliverer" and when she allowed Crassus to be executed in "When In Rome...".

Even though the pain was unbearable Gabrielle managed to move on to the second river, the river of woe. Upon entering the cold waters of the river Gabrielle thinks back to the Kingdom of Chin and how she nearly got her best friend executed, Gabrielle now believes she has found out the root to her pain she thinks that she can go back, but on the way she nearly dies and realises that she has not yet found the real key. With so much pain Gabrielle doesn't want to go on but she realises that the only other way out is death. So she goes on to the last river she has to cross when crossing the fiery river she sees the real key, when Xena went to kill Ming Tien Gabrielle felt so betrayed because Xena was prepared to throw away all the years they had spent together. So she tries to stop her, she wanted to betray her because she was so jealous, and she knew it might lead to Xena's death. The only way she could get their first was to let Ares God of War magically take her across to Chin and in return she would own him a favour so she did. When the journey across the rivers had finished Gabrielle knew that Ares was not real just part of the pain and decided that although the pain inside was great if she lost all her memories she would forget Xena, Lila, her parents and Perdicus so she didn't empty the bowl she lived with the pain.
